NickiA recent poll on KeepAndBearArms.com asked the readers for whom they intend to vote in the next presidential election. Thus far 1061 people voted, and a surprising 46.8 percent asserted they would “hold their nose and vote for George ‘Patriot Act’ Bush.” Obviously the KABA poll is not scientific, and we have no way of knowing how many of those who voted were actual gun owners and Second Amendment supporters and how many decided to send their friends to “rock the poll.” However, if we assume, the poll to be a true reflection of gun owners’ and Second Amendment supporters’ views, the results are disturbing and odd.

True conservatives cast votes for George W. Bush in November, 2000, because he claimed he stood for smaller government and increased freedom. They believed he would make this country stronger and more secure, while encouraging Americans to stand up and become more self-reliant and less dependent on the state. Here is what we got, in a nutshell:

We got a president who created the biggest, most bloated federal bureaucracy since World War II. Congress was told that the new Homeland Security Department would be “budget neutral,” according to Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX). The agency was supposed to be a “reorganization of existing federal employees” and would not increase the federal budget. This turned out to be a blatant lie. By the time Congressional and White House leeches were finished with it, this monster’s starting price tag and sheer size was out of control.

We got a president who used fear and patriotism to help bring about some of the most intrusive, potentially freedom-crippling measures like the Patriot Act and CAPPS 2. Never mind that the internet communications, financial records, homes, property and freedom to travel of law abiding citizens are now easily subject to government scrutiny all in the name of fighting a “War on Terrorism.” In fact, if you don’t support increased government powers, you are no patriot, you are against America, against American ideals and principles and against freedom. Just ask him! “You're either with us or against us in the fight against terror,” he proclaimed, and God forbid we disagree with his tactics!

We got a president who claimed he was a friend of the Second Amendment, but would cheerily sign an “assault weapons” bill into law and make it permanent.

We got a president who asserted that Americans need to become more self reliant and independent, but cheerily supported steel tariffs and farm subsidies, which make the U.S. steel industry and farms dependent on government protections and handouts to shield them from possible failure in the free market.

We got a president who apparently believes that schools just can’t educate children properly without the federal government mandating every step and breath and bribing states and locales to comply with tax dollars.

We got a president who bribed states to relinquish control over criminal cases over to the feds with “Project Safe Neighborhoods” money sucked from the taxpayers.

We got a president who thinks it’s perfectly acceptable to fund substandard art with your tax dollars, even if said art would rightfully fail in the free market. Because after all, “artists” who sanctify their excretory waste on a canvas need an audience too!

We got a president who gives lip service to safety and has done exactly nothing to arm the nation’s pilots. In the meantime, people who have the gall to want to travel by plane must assent to be probed, prodded, searched, violated, humiliated and robbed. Don’t believe me? How much property has been confiscated from travelers over the past couple of years? “Tom Blank, assistant administrator for transportation security policy, testified before Congress last week that the Transportation Security Administration has intercepted more than 1,650 firearms, more than 3 million knives and more than 57,000 incendiary devices since shortly after the terrorist hijackings on September 11, 2001.” And how high are the fines? “Anyone trying to sneak a knife onto an airplane could be fined $250 and a passenger with an explosive could get as much as $10,000 under new guidelines.”

I could go on and on – the Medicare bill fiasco, the promise to veto any changes that would weaken the Patriot Act, the appointing of judges who blatantly reinvent the Constitution, like that traitor Reggie Walton, who supported the DC firearms ban, rewarding illegal aliens for breaking American immigration laws…But you get the message.

Bush is likely one of the worst presidents we have had in a long time. He has no respect for freedom. He has no respect for your earnings, your privacy, your property your rights or the Constitution. He has respect for his own power and the ability to manipulate Americans with cute (and curiously Leninist) adages.

Conservatives are crying that Bush has turned away from them – that he has turned away from traditional conservative values of limited government and freedom, and yet the majority of them will give him their vote anyway.

Do they actually think that things will get better? What incentive to Republicans and Democrats have to change their ways, if they know they’ll get your vote anyway? Why would they bother doing anything differently, if you continue supporting them for fear that the other guy will win, if you don’t. The only way things are going to change in this country is if every person voted their conscience – if every conservative patriot got the courage to cast aside the stale career politicians, who betray them year after year. Otherwise, if you “hold your nose and vote for George “Patriot Act” Bush,” you will deserve what you get – more of what makes you want to hold your nose in the first place.

Think about it.
