TURNING SCHOOLS INTO VICTIM DISARMAMENT ZONES

It appears the gun banners didn’t learn a thing from the Columbine massacre. Not a thing. Despite overwhelming evidence that gun control does nothing but disarm potential victims and gives armed criminals their choice of defenseless prey, they continue to push for more victim disarmament inside our schools.
We have all read the absurd effects of “zero tolerance” policies in the nation’s schools. Intelligent, committed, bright kids are ruined, punished, expelled and reviled for committing the “crime” of possessing not only guns (with absolutely no intent to cause harm with them), but what some hanky-wringers would perceive as a weapon. Such “horrifying” items include a bread knife, a small knife to be used to cut an apple, a rubber band (in this appalling example of school administrator insanity this child was forced to undergo psychiatric counseling!), a key chain knife, and tiny little GI Joe guns. But I’m not going to rehash the absurdities that pop up every so often and make us shake our heads in wonder.
Today I want to take aim at the disturbing and dangerous trend that appears to be creeping up in this nation’s schools – they are becoming armed minimum security camps where parents are forced to send their children each day. Metal detectors grace the entrances. Security monitors keep and eye on the kids, and armed guards ensure that they are completely disarmed and vulnerable to any armed thug who chooses to abuse them.
The problem is these extreme measures are not working. Armed students still make their way into schools, and reports about these incidents litter the news nearly every day.
A high school student in Texas was caught with a pistol and ammunition on campus.
In Richmond Virginia, security reports obtained recorded at least 18 incidents of weapons being found in schools from September, 2003 to January, 2004. Those weapons included knives, shotgun shells, BB guns and handguns.
In January, a student in Rhode Island was suspended for the rest of the school year after having brought a BB gun to school.
And in “gun-free” Washington, DC, where the entire population is disarmed and at the mercy of armed criminals, a student at Ballou High School died after being shot in the chest several times.
There are many such stories, but one thing remains constant: the teachers and students in these schools obey the laws. They submissively leave their tools of self defense at home and disarm themselves for “the common good.” Meanwhile, armed thugs, whose priorities do not include following the letter of the law or having respect for rules, regulation, property or, many times, human life, continue to victimize those whom the government bureaucrats have deemed it necessary to disarm.
Worse yet, schools go into “lockdown” mode the minute reports of an armed intruder reach the bureaucrats’ ears! They lock all the potential prey inside the school with the armed thug, without affording them the means to defend themselves! Apparently teaching children that the way to deal with armed assailants is to cower under their desks is preferable to having one armed teacher or school administrator blow a hole in the thug.
The bureaucrats tell us to depend on the police to protect us. They want us to call 9-1-1 and wait patiently for police to arrive on the scene. They don’t want potential victims armed, because someone, God forbid, could get hurt.
But let’s ask ourselves this: How many dead victims could a Harris and Klebold claim in the time that it takes police to respond?
In September, 2003, a teen gunman arrived at Lewis and Clarke High School in Spokane, WA at 11:10 a.m. He was apprehended within 14 minutes, and Police Chief Roger Bragdon said that was “not bad.” Not bad? How many disarmed lives could that armed teenager have claimed in 14 minutes? How many bullets would have riddled how many bodies in that amount of time?
In April, 1998 a teen gunman killed a science teacher in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. He was stopped by an armed citizen with a shotgun, while it took 11 minutes longer for the police to arrive and apprehend him.
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, only 31.7 percent of violent crimes, including rape and sexual assault, saw a police response of 5 minutes or less. Twenty eight percent took 6-10 minutes to respond to a crime of violence, while in 31.4 percent responded in 11 minutes to an hour.
How long does it take for a criminal to shoot one unarmed victim? How long does it take for an armed thug to pull the trigger and how many will die waiting for the police? How will cowering under a desk, locked in the same building with an armed villain, protect the children and teachers in those schools? How will taking away their every means of defending themselves, and punishing them for possessing anything resembling a tool of self defense going to save them from someone who has no regard for the law and no respect for human life?
The only thing school and government bureaucrats are doing by banning guns in schools and enforcing these absurd rules by metal detectors, random searches and security monitors is ensuring that the armed criminals will have a building full of living, breathing targets, dependent on the government for their very lives, and indoctrinated into a coward’s mentality of “hide under desk and wait for the big boys with guns to handle the threat, because you aren’t good enough, responsible enough or privileged enough to take responsibility for your own life.”
